This moment, heavy with soot, represents relief?Īlong with his gifts for atmospheric conveyance, McCurry offers portraiture on a different plane. Does he scrunch his forehead the entire time he’s working? Can one smoke in the mine? Presumably not. The coal miner’s fingers part for a smoke, yellow fingernails, shirt opened to the air, coal everywhere except the creases on his face. And yet, the images are packed with meaningful details, with economy of language. He manages a simplicity, or rather, a lack of excess in his composition. He is able to capture an intense gaze that draws in the viewer, however, there’s much to gain from the surrounding details as well. McCurry’s intimacy with a place is translated to an intimacy with the people. We are welcomed into the scene and are surprised by its beauty, even in moments of violence. His photographs have the capacity to erode one-dimensional assumptions about the country, allowing the land to be seen in its complexity. McCurry’s Afghanistan may not be the Afghanistan we are expecting.

I even resisted the temptation on more than one occasion to skip sections as started repeating itself. There was no big surprise at the end which I was hoping for to bring this lackluster book up a notch, just a predictable explanation to the whole scenario. I really didn't get to root for or even relate to Jake, and the fact that his personal life was so hidden seemed strange. I admit this is a review for the Unabridged Audible version of the book, that had some cliche Afro-American voices and all the usual redneck-ness that readers throw into Grisham's books, but the story itself was just too slow. Firstly, I didn't see why this had to be set back in the late eighties (did so many people really have car phones back then?) and although I read A Time to Kill, to which this has been dubbed a sequel of sorts, I read it more than 15 years ago and remember it being a lot better than this. For me personally, it would actually be a 2.5-star rating as Grisham's writing is commendable, but he has written so much better stuff. Now, I know I'll probably get bashed for this, but this is one boring read. The book has been called one of the most influential books of the decade. His first book, The Tipping Point, has sold over a million copies. Malcolm Gladwell has been called a marketing god. Now, the Government tells potential asylum seekers that the reason not to come to Australia is that you might encounter Australian officials. You will regret it (we will make sure you do).Īnd AusOpinion contributor Mark Fletcher wrote: The message of this comic is: stay where you are. New Zealand cartoonist and author of the graphic novel Hicksville Dylan Horrocks summed this up on a Facebook thread: The comic has been labelled government propaganda by many commentators – though as most have also pointed out, it is a strange kind of propaganda which paints its own government as such a menacing and threatening presence. En route, the boat is detained by the Australian navy and the man is taken to an offshore detention centre where he is homesick and plagued by mosquitoes. He flies to Pakistan, then to Indonesia, where a people smuggler offers him passage on a boat. The wordless comic tells the story of a young, poor Afghani man who works as a mechanic and is persuaded by his family to use their savings to seek asylum in Australia – specifically, for some reason, on the Perth foreshore. But the process could cause a bottleneck at the border and strain federal, state and local government resources. Now that Title 42 has been lifted, tens of thousands of migrants fleeing poverty, violence and political instability will be subjected to decades-old immigration laws that will allow them to stay in the country while their cases make their way through immigration court. In March of 2020 then president Trump invoked the rule as a public health emergency measure, allowing for the quick expulsion of migrants at the border. What Now? : Consider This from NPR On Thursday, the Biden administration lifted title 42, a pandemic-era policy that shut down virtually all avenues for migrants to seek asylum in the US.
